Should avocados come with a warning label?

According to the British Association of Plastic Surgeons, yes! In fact, so many people are getting cut slicing avocados in a cupped hand, ER doctors call it “avocado hand.” And just one slip of the knife can damage tendons and nerves, requiring surgery and months to heal. Even then, some people never fully regain use of their hand.

So how can you avoid injury? Slice avocados on a cutting board. If you DO get cut, plastic surgeon Dr. Sheel Sharma says put pressure on the wound and raise your arm above your head. If the bleeding won't stop, you can't bend your finger, or you feel numbness – which is a sign of nerve damage – head to your local ER.
