Dealing with upset family members

Do you have someone in your family you always butt heads with? No matter what’s being discussed - or what the situation is - they find a reason to get mad. Clinical psychiatrist Dr. Mark Goulston says what they have is called “impotent rage.”

It’s anger that results from feeling powerless. They feel like they don't have control over their life, so they lash out at whoever is around. Or they feel they were dealt a bad hand in life - so they take out their feelings of frustration on others. So how can you deal with them? Listen to them. Really try and understand what they’re saying and rephrase it back to them. Once they feel like they’ve been heard, they’ll calm down. Because it makes them feel they’re being treated fairly.
