Chronic stress can trigger weight gain.

Because stress slows our metabolism to a crawl. A study from the University of Florida found chronic stress boosts production of betatrophin, a protein that inhibits an enzyme that breaks down fat. And that makes us burn about 14 fewer calories every hour. That may not sound like much, but do that day-in, day-out, and stress could cause you to gain 11 pounds in a year.
